Why Spring Is the Perfect Time to Start

Spring is nature's green light. Soil temperatures rise, daylight hours increase, and the risk of hard frost fades. If you've been thinking about growing your own food, there's no better time to begin.

You don't need a large garden — a few pots on a patio or a windowsill will do. Here are five vegetables that are forgiving, fast-growing, and perfect for beginners.

1. Radishes

Radishes are the ultimate quick win. Sow seeds directly into the ground or a container, and you'll be pulling up crunchy, peppery roots in as little as 25 days.

  • Sow: March to September
  • Harvest: 3-4 weeks after sowing
  • Space needed: Very little — perfect for pots
  • 2. Lettuce

Cut-and-come-again lettuce varieties let you harvest leaves repeatedly from a single sowing. They grow happily in containers, window boxes, or garden beds.

  • Sow: March to August
  • Harvest: 4-6 weeks for baby leaves
  • Top tip: Sow a small batch every two weeks for a continuous supply
  • 3. Spring Onions

Spring onions are low-maintenance and fit into the smallest spaces. They grow upright, so they're ideal for containers and borders.

  • Sow: March to July
  • Harvest: 8-10 weeks after sowing
  • Bonus: They rarely suffer from pests
  • 4. Peas

Peas are a joy to grow, especially with children. They climb, flower, and produce sweet pods that taste infinitely better picked fresh.

  • Sow: March to June
  • Harvest: 12-14 weeks after sowing
  • Support: Give them a simple bamboo frame or netting to climb
  • 5. Courgettes

One or two courgette plants will produce a remarkable amount of fruit through summer. They need a bit more space but are incredibly productive.

  • Sow indoors: April
  • Plant out: Late May (after last frost)
  • Harvest: July to October
  • Warning: You will have more courgettes than you know what to do with — perfect for sharing on Locavori!
