A ComunAI Initiative

Science-Based Living,
Rooted Locally

Locavori is part of ComunAI's mission to apply science and technology for better living. We believe that growing your own food, sharing it with neighbours, and building local food networks isn't just a nice idea — it's one of the most impactful things you can do for your health, your community, and the planet.

Why “Locavori”?

Our name tells our story. A locavore is someone who eats food grown or produced locally — a word coined from the Latin locus (place) and vorare (to eat). We took that idea and gave it a twist.

Locavoriadds an Italian-inspired plural ending — because eating locally was never meant to be a solo endeavour. It's something you do together: growing together, sharing together, eating together. The name carries the warmth of a shared table, the spirit of a neighbourhood garden, and the simple conviction that food is better when it comes from nearby and is shared with people you know.

In a world of global supply chains and anonymous transactions, Locavori is a return to something older and wiser — local food, grown with care, shared with generosity. That's what the name means to us, and it's what we're building every day.

The ComunAI Vision

ComunAI exists to build tools that help people live better — not through hype or trends, but through evidence-based approaches grounded in science. We develop technology that strengthens real-world communities, promotes sustainable practices, and makes well-researched knowledge accessible to everyone.

Locavori is our answer to a simple question: what if the best food system isn't industrial and global, but personal and local? The science supports it. Freshly harvested produce is nutritionally superior. Shorter supply chains mean lower emissions. Community food projects improve mental and physical health. Locavori brings all of this together in one platform.

We're not asking people to go back in time. We're using AI-powered recommendations, climate-zone awareness, and modern design to make local food growing and sharing as easy as ordering a delivery — but infinitely more rewarding.

Why Growing Local Matters

The case for local food isn't sentimental — it's scientific, environmental, and deeply practical.

Lower Food Miles, Lower Emissions

The average supermarket vegetable travels over 1,500 miles before reaching your plate. Food grown in your garden or swapped with a neighbour travels metres, not miles. By growing and sharing locally, every Locavori member directly reduces transport emissions, cold-chain energy use, and packaging waste.

Truly Organic, Truly Fresh

Commercial "organic" still involves industrial processes, long supply chains, and days between harvest and your table. Home-grown produce picked the same day you eat it retains significantly more vitamins and antioxidants. Studies show that vegetables can lose 30–50% of their Vitamin C within a week of harvest. When you grow your own, freshness isn't a label — it's a fact.

Stronger Neighbourhoods

Research consistently shows that communities with shared green spaces and food-growing initiatives report higher social cohesion, lower isolation, and greater wellbeing. Locavori turns the simple act of sharing a bag of tomatoes into the start of a lasting neighbourhood connection. Food has brought people together for millennia — we're just making it easier.

Better Health, Naturally

Gardening itself is a form of moderate exercise, and studies link regular gardening to reduced stress, lower blood pressure, and improved mental health. Add in the nutritional benefits of eating freshly harvested, chemical-free produce and you have a complete wellbeing package — body, mind, and community.

Less Waste, More Value

In the UK alone, households throw away 6.6 million tonnes of food each year. Much of this is perfectly good produce that simply couldn't be eaten in time. Locavori's swap board turns your surplus courgettes into your neighbour's dinner — and their spare strawberries into your breakfast. Nothing wasted, everything valued.

Our Sharing Principles

To be part of the Locavori community, we ask everyone to commit to these principles. They're not rules for the sake of rules — they're the foundation of a food system that actually works.

🌱

Organic Only

Everything shared on Locavori must be grown without synthetic pesticides, herbicides, or chemical fertilisers. We trust our community to grow responsibly — the way food was meant to be grown. This isn't about certification paperwork; it's about a shared commitment to clean, honest food.

📍

Hyper-Local Sharing

Sharing happens within your neighbourhood, not across the country. Locavori limits swap distances to keep food miles near zero and to ensure that every exchange strengthens a real, local community. You should be able to walk or cycle to collect your swap.

🤝

Community First

Locavori is not a marketplace. There are no prices, no profit margins, no commercial sellers. It's neighbour-to-neighbour sharing built on trust, generosity, and the simple pleasure of growing more than you need and giving the rest to someone who'll enjoy it.

🌍

Environmentally Responsible

We encourage practices that work with nature: companion planting, composting, water conservation, and biodiversity. Every garden on Locavori is a small ecosystem, and together they form a green network across the neighbourhood.

📚

Knowledge Freely Shared

Growing expertise shouldn't be gatekept. Our growing guides, seasonal calendars, and AI recommendations are available to everyone. Experienced growers mentor newcomers, and the whole community benefits from shared wisdom.

🔬

Science-Backed Guidance

Our recommendations are built on horticultural science — RHS hardiness zones, evidence-based companion planting data, and peer-reviewed nutritional research. We don't guess; we use data to help you grow better.

The Bigger Picture

Locavori is one piece of a larger puzzle. At ComunAI, we're exploring how technology can support better living across multiple dimensions — from food and health to community and sustainability. Every project we build is guided by the same question: does this genuinely improve people's lives, and can we prove it?

We measure our success not in engagement metrics or growth curves, but in real-world outcomes: kilograms of produce shared, food miles saved, neighbours connected, and gardens thriving. If technology can't point to tangible improvements in people's daily lives, it's not doing its job.

Locavori is open to everyone. Whether you're an experienced allotment holder with decades of growing wisdom or someone who's never planted a seed, there's a place for you here. The best food systems are inclusive ones, and the best communities are built one conversation — one bag of tomatoes — at a time.
