  • Southern Hemisphere: Start in spring once frost risk has passed, generally September to November.
  • Always check your local last-frost date — it's the single most useful number for timing warm-season crops. Gardeners in cooler climates (USDA zones 3–5, or cool-temperate RHS areas) should start seeds indoors and use black plastic or fabric to warm the soil.
  • If your season is short, choose fast-maturing varieties like 'Minnesota Midget' or 'Hale's Best Jumbo'.

    Starting From Seed

    Cantaloupes dislike root disturbance, so plan accordingly.

    1. Sow in biodegradable pots (peat or paper) so you can plant the whole pot without disturbing roots. Plant seeds 1–2 cm (½ in) deep, two seeds per pot. 2. Keep them warm. A heat mat that holds 24–29°C (75–85°F) speeds germination, which usually takes 5–10 days. 3. Thin to the strongest seedling once the first true leaves appear. 4. Harden off for a week before transplanting — gradually expose seedlings to outdoor conditions so they aren't shocked.

    Soil, Sun, and Spacing

    Melons are hungry, thirsty plants that demand the sunniest spot you have.

  • Rich, well-draining soil: work in plenty of compost or well-rotted manure before planting. Aim for a slightly acidic to neutral pH of 6.0–6.8.
  • Spacing: plant in mounds or hills 90–120 cm (3–4 ft) apart, with 2–3 plants per hill. The mound improves drainage and warms the root zone.

    Cantaloupes produce separate male and female flowers, and they rely on bees to move pollen between them. To support good fruit set:

  • Avoid spraying insecticides that harm pollinators.
  • Plant pollinator-friendly flowers nearby.
  • If bees are scarce, hand-pollinate by brushing pollen from a male flower (slim stem) into the centre of a female flower (look for the tiny melon-shaped swelling at its base) using a small paintbrush.

  • Powdery mildew: white, dusty patches on leaves. Improve airflow, water at the base, and choose resistant varieties.
